TAX COLLECTION
The Tax Collector is responsible for billing, collecting, reporting and enforcing the $23.5 million total tax levy which is comprised of schools, county, library and municipal tax levies as well as delinquent taxes.
Due Dates: Property taxes are due quarterly on Feb 1, May 1, Aug 1, and Nov 1. A ten-day grace period to the 10th of the month is allowed by resolution of the Mayor and Council after which interest is charged from the first day of the month in which payments are due. If the 10th falls on a weekend or holiday, the grace period extends to the first business day following the weekend.
Delinquencies: Late payments are charged interest at a rate of 8% on the first $1,500 of the delinquency and 18% on the balance.
Payments/ Receipts: Your taxes are only considered paid when the payment is received in the tax office. Postmark is not accepted. Please include the quarterly payment stub from your tax bill with your payment. Your cancelled check is your receipt. If you would like your bill receipted, please send the entire tax bill with your check and a return self-addressed stamped envelope and it will be mailed back to you.
If you are writing a check to pay your taxes, please make check payable to: Borough of Haworth and mail to 300 Haworth Ave OR save postage and use the drop box at the back entrance to Borough Hall.
Taxpayers are urged to read all of the information contained on the front and the back of their tax bills. Please note that according to New Jersey State Law (N.J.S.A. 54:4-64,) “The validity of any tax or assessment, or the time at which it shall be payable, shall NOT be affected by the failure of a taxpayer to receive a tax bill, but every taxpayer is put on notice to ascertain from the proper official of the taxing district the amount which may be due for taxes and assessments.”
For new homeowners…welcome to Haworth! Please contact the Tax office if you did not receive a copy of the tax bill at closing. Once you own the property, it is your responsibility (by law) to ascertain when taxes are due and the amount.
Post-Dated Checks: By statute, our office is required to deposit payments as soon as they are received and we cannot accept “post-dated” checks. Therefore, please date your check the day you write it out, just as you would if you were paying in person.
Online Lookup or Payment of Property Taxes:
Property taxes may be paid by credit card, debit card and e-check payments via the link on the Haworth website. There are convenience fees associated with each transaction that will be charged to each user. Convenience fees are retained by the service provider and are not paid to, or shared with the Borough of Haworth.

E-check: $1.95 convenience fee per transaction
All debit & credit card payments: 2.95% of your total payment.
The interest shown on delinquent taxes is calculated to TODAY'S date. For payments being mailed or put in the drop box at Borough hall, click on 'Project Interest' and enter the business date (Mon-Fri 9am-3pm) your payment will be RECEIVED in the tax office.
Online payments for tax title liens are not accepted.
Direct Withdrawal of Property Taxes: Many homeowners have already opted to enroll in Haworth’s ACH program where property tax payments are automatically deducted from their checking or savings account on or around the due dates of February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1. New enrollments or changes must be received at least TWO weeks prior to the quarterly due date. You may cancel at any time.
Changing from Escrow to Non-escrow? Tax payers who are no longer escrowing their property taxes through their mortgage company should use their advice copy of their most recent tax bill for payments.
SENIOR DEDUCTION
VETERAN OR WIDOW OF A VETERAN Tax Deduction ($250 per year):
The SENIOR deduction has both a minimum age and a maximum income requirement ($10,000 after a permitted exclusion of Soc Sec Benefits, OR Federal, State, County, or Municipal Gov’t Retirement /Disability Pension).
Application:
The VETERAN’S (or Widow of a Veteran who has not remarried) deduction requires a copy of DD214 showing Honorable Discharge and home ownership since Oct 1st of the pre-tax year.
