Update from the Mayor and Council

Seeing the horror unfold in Ohio on February 23 has compelled the Borough to examine the CSX process and safeguards. A portion of CSX Transportation's 20,000 route-mile rail network runs through our town center. Their freight trains pass through town daily, with varying frequency. And we have no real-time information as to what is being transported at any given time.

As a newly elected mayor, I would like a clear understanding of the federal regulations that are in place to protect our residents, our environment, and our infrastructure. Within 2 weeks of that incident, and with the full support of the Council, askedCongressman Josh Gottheimer to look into the regulations for trains carrying multiple cars with hazardous substances and to work with us to get clear answers from CSX as to categories of hazardous substances that are carried through Haworth, awhat frequency, & under what federal regulations We are working together with his staff to meet with CSX to answer these and more questionsI want to ensure residents that you are served by a professional Police Department and Volunteer Fire and AmbulancCorps that regularly train for large scale emergencies. Further to that, an evacuation plan is part of our Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Plan. We will keep the residents informed as to our finding.

Haworth Affordable Housing Lottery

Applications for the Affordable Housing units on Lakeshore Drive are now available on the website of Piazza and Associates. Lakeshore Estates is a condominium community designed to meet the Borough's "fair share" of the growing need for affordable housing in New Jersey. Lakeshore Estates includes 9 one-, two- and three- bedroom, low- and moderate- income homes for sale to income qualified households. These homes are available to qualified applicants whose combined household income meets the criteria for affordable housing.

Because this is a new property, a random selection will be held for all preliminary applications received on or before 3:00 PM, March 30th, 2023. A preference will be given to households that live or work in Housing Region 1 (Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, and Sussex Counties).
