9/20/26
Yesterday was the 2nd annual Haworth 5K/Celebrate Haworth Day combo. Having these events in one day, after celebrating them separately for decades, has been a huge success. The weather was beautiful, and the energy level was even more beautiful.
As always, we thank our tireless volunteers who quite literally make these landmark days possible. These traditions exist and continue because of the work they do. Thank you to the Recreation Commission members and the members of the Haworth 5K committee for their work to make yesterday a successful and enjoyable day for Haworthians of all ages and the out-of-towners who come to enjoy them as well.
Those volunteers can’t achieve their vision without the tremendous and reliable support of our extraordinary machine behind the scenes. Thank you to the Haworth Police and Police Auxiliary, the Haworth Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Haworth DPW, the Haworth Volunteer Fire Department, the Borough Hall staff who make sure our events are safe, organized and clean, before, during and long after people go home. The governing body is proud to be able to support and assist you along the way.
The Mayor and Council have the privilege of watching these people work selflessly year after year, event after event, day after day, always with the singular goal of being better than the one before.
During yesterday's 5K a medical emergency occurred on the course ahead of the finish line on Haworth Avenue. The dedication and experience I mentioned above was abundant. Protocols were followed for swift action, and all of the heroic first responders on the scene displayed professionalism and clear headedness while performing life-saving measures. We are especially grateful to members of the Haworth Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Haworth Police Department, medical professionals on the scene and the race directors and volunteers for their leadership, composure and dedication to the safety of the racer in need of medical attention and the community of racers and spectators still out on the course. Special thanks to Demarest Firefighter Matt Carey, HPD Lt. Justin Fox, HVAC President Craig Layne, HPD Detective Sgt. James Morgan, Race Coordinator Dr. Jeff Pavell, HPD Sgt. Gianluca Ragone, and HVAC Capt. Andy Reithmayr for their hands on care.
Also providing invaluable assistance from HVAC: Dave Cohen, Alan Dickstein, Allison Wallin.
Please join us in thanking ALL of our first responders and ALL of our community volunteers for their selflessness.
We wish the runner a full and complete recovery.
