7/7/2026 Update on Schraalenburgh/Haworth Ave & Dr/HIll St

Dear Haworth neighbors,

As promised, work on Schraalenburgh to restore power was completed this evening.

PSE&G not only had to safely remove the downed poles, but they also had to clear their wires and install the replacement poles. Completing those steps expedited the remaining work. The police and DPW could not tow the car buried under the tree or break down that tree until it was safe to pass through the wiring. The tree at the Chestnut Bend end took hours to break down and safely disentangle from wiring.

The final piece is the dangling cable wires. Both Optimum and Verizon are mobilized and working to get those repairs done. I am actively communicating with liaisons from both. Please note, the PSEG foreman reported to our DPW Superintendent that they will put the new poles in and move their electric to them, but they are not allowed to touch the cable lines or remove the olds poles. Until the cable companies complete relocation of their wires to the new poles, the old poles will remain in the road with the cable wires still attached. This is their protocol and will guide our traffic flow decision making. HPD will monitor overnight. Be mindful of this as you resume walking on Schraalenburgh.

Haworth Ave & Hill St.

PSEG continues work at these locations and are not leaving until power is re-energized. Haworth Ave will most likely be impassable for traffic until some time tomorrow. Tree removal is scheduled for tomorrow. DPW has asked that the road remain closed to give Arrow the space they need.

Haworth Drive

There are also still low-hanging (low voltage) cable wires on Haworth Drive that need to be addressed. Additionally, there was a gas leak caused by a power line. That leak ignited a damaged car parked on the street overnight 7/4-7/5. Our Fire Department (many of whom had been out working DPW shifts) fought that car fire until it was contained. 

O&R has very few left without power and continue to work to restore those individuals.

I want to again thank our DPW, Police, Code Official, and OEM Coordinator. They have worked virtually around the clock since the storm hit Saturday night. Despite the holiday. Despite the relentless rain. Despite some having no power themselves. I want to also thank PSE&G and O&R for working for us as fast as they could. It does not feel fast when you're suffering through it, and they weren't always visible to homeowners, but they stayed responsive, communicative and kept their word. I would also be remiss if I didn't acknowledge direct offers to help from Governor Sherrill, Senator Schepisi and Assemblyman Auth. They each quietly (and not so quietly) helped me keep pressure on our providers and provided moral support to me.

I remain grateful to all of our emergency responders, office staff, Councilmembers for your dedication and work under any and all conditions. And, finally, to our residents, especially those directly impacted: thank you for your patience and trust in us to get you and our beautiful Haworth back to normal. We're almost there.
