Spotted Lanternfly Info
The Borough has been approved for the state’s 2023 Spotted Lanternfly Reimbursement program. In order to be reimbursed for our efforts, the state requires mandatory training for those who will be using chemical spray treatments. In the meantime, after much research, we have decided to tape trees in the Terrace Street business district to help remediate the infestation. We will also be placing SLF circle traps (approved, safe, non-toxic method) on trees throughout Borough parks and properties. While these traps may not eliminate lanternflies, they have proven effective in reducing their numbers on host trees such as tree of heaven, walnut, and willow. The Borough will also be spot treating areas throughout the borough near our parks, playgrounds and local businesses.
Property owners are responsible for maintaining trees and all vegetation on their private property. Property owners are urged to take measures to help control the SLF population.
For the link to the tree tape that the Borough will be using, click here.
Homeowners can make circle traps and learn more using the following resources:
- NJ Department of Agriculture: https://www.nj.gov/agriculture/divisions/pi/prog/pests-diseases/spotted-lanternfly/Spotted
- Lanternfly Penn State Homeowner DIY Trap Ideas: https://extension.psu.edu/how-to-build-a-new-style-spotted-lanternfly-circle-trap
For infestations, property owners should contact a NJ licensed pest control operator to treat the infested tree with insecticide or a NJ licensed tree care expert, depending on the severity of the infestation.
We ask residents to stomp them when they can, google tutorials to learn how to make homemade traps for their own property, and to be patient as we remediate. And remember every town is suffering from this, and these flies often travel on car tires. We can't expect to be spared. Check your property regularly. Residents will be notified before public spaces are sprayed.

Haworth Public School
To celebrate the beginning of the school year, the Haworth Public School and the Haworth Board of Health are partnering to present two fun programs:
The Walk Back to School Challenge encourages students to walk to school! At the Mayor’s request, the school and BOH are teaming up in support of this initiative to promote walking and a healthy lifestyle. This will also help fulfill a requirement for the Brough to obtain DOT grant money for sidewalks along highly traveled routes to school.
And in an effort to keep up the walking beyond the first day of school, attached is a link to let us know how often you're walking to school.

The First Annual "Chalk the Walk" will help motivate Haworth families to walk back to school!
Come to Haworth Public School on Tuesday, September 5th, between 3-5pm to help decorate the sidewalk with welcome back messages and words of encouragement for our students. Join the HPS teachers, administration and staff to help beautify the campus and encourage families to walk to school to admire your artwork!
Catch up with old friends, teachers and meet new Haworth families. Stop by the ice cream truck for a fun afternoon.
