Borough of Haworth, New Jersey

Shade Tree Commission

Keeping Haworth Beautiful & Green

Each year we attempt to plant as many shade trees as our budget will allow. We were awarded a $25,000 grant from the 2006 Cool Cites Community Stewardship Incentive Program. When received, the grant will be used to complete the planting program started in the spring of 2006 along Haworth Avenue between the railroad tracks and Schraalenburgh Road.

We have applied for a second Cool Cities Grant and await the results. If approved, we have plans being developed for the area around the elementary school, and selected locations throughout the borough.

All trees are planted in the borough right-of-way along both sides of the street, usually within ten feet of the pavement, depending on the tax map data. Location is dependent on underground utilities, overhead wires, and distance and age of adjoining trees. If you are interested in having a tree planted on your town easement or know of another good location, please contact the Borough Hall.

If you have a desire to assist in our efforts in maintaining one of Haworth's principle attributes--its TREES--you can help by participating in the PLANT-A-TREE program:

  1. TOWN EASEMENT PLAN: Plant a tree or trees on the easement between the street and your home. You buy the tree & the HSTC will plant it.

  2. MEMORIAL TREE FUND: Plant a Memorial Tree in memory of a loved one at special site.

  3. DONATION: Make a contribution to the HSTC towards the planting of trees on town property.

  4. REPLACE-A-TREE FUND: Choose a town tree you like that is unhealthy, or dying, and plant another tree nearby to grow & replace it when it goes.

Purchasing and planting will cost approximately $250 to $500, depending on species and size and is generally limited to shade trees.

If you have an interest in participating in the program, please contact Borough Hall. Checks should be made out to the "Borough of Haworth", marked for the HSTC.

TIPS -- Two landscaping practices that will kill a tree are:

  • Mulch "VOLCANOES" mounded around the base of the trunk. The root collar, that is, where the main truck begins to flair out, should be visible. Keep mulch about 6 inches away.
  • Mechanical weed eaters used around the trunk base that scar and damage the outer bark, ultimately killing the tree. Example: tree in front of the bank on Haworth Ave.(See protective guards used on trees at tennis courts.)

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep Haworth a beautiful place to live.
