Scam Alert

Recently, the Tax Collector's office in Lacey, NJ, was notified by a senior citizen taxpayer that she had been contacted by phone in regard to the Homestead Rebate. The senior stated that the caller claimed to represent the State's Homestead Rebate Program. The caller said, "If you are (name), press 1." The next message said, "Now enter your social security number."

Thankfully, the senior hung up without providing her social security number. The State of New Jersey does not call homes requesting social security numbers, for any reason, so this caller was obviously a fraud.

The Prosecutor's Office in Ocean County, The NJ Division of Taxation, and the Tax Collector's office in Lacey, New Jersey, have asked all Tax Collectors in New Jersey to cooperate in an effort to track down the perpetrator of this particular scam, and you can help.

If you are a Haworth resident, particularly seniors, and you receive a call from someone claiming to work for the Homestead Rebate Program, and they request your social security number, please do not give them any information. Instead, notify the Haworth Tax Collector's office (201) 384-0450. If you will kindly provide us with your name, address and phone number, we will pass this information along to the agencies involved in this investigation. With everyone's cooperation, it is hoped that the persons involved in this scam will be brought to justice, and that the public will be protected from further such abuses.
