Message from the Haworth Police Department

In an effort to help keep this community safe, the Haworth Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind our residents of some of the steps that they can take to make their homes more secure:

  • The most important step is proper lighting. The use of at least two interior light timers is very important. The timers should be periodically reset to accommodate the changing light conditions brought on by the change of seasons. It is important that they be set to indicate the presence of someone in the residence. This is extremely important during the early evening hours. A dark house at this time of day indicates that it is almost assuredly vacant.

  • Secondly, it is very important to lock and secure your residence. This should be done regardless of the length of time you plan on being away from your home.

  • Thirdly, if you have an alarm system, use it. The Haworth Police Department recommends the installation and use of alarm systems for all residences.

  • In addition to these steps, it is important to clear the area in front of windows and doors that are hidden from view by trees and shrubs. Also, look out for your neighbor's well being. If they work late and cannot get home early enough to remove mail or bring in garbage cans, make the effort to do it for them. Having these items out in front of a residence makes a home look vacant, even more so if you are using lights with timers. By contributing to your neighbor's well being you make the entire neighborhood look safe. This will force potential criminals to look elsewhere for opportunities to commit crimes. If you are going out or expect to be away for any significant time, alert your neighbors. Let them know that no persons are expected to be on your premises. Ask your neighbor to park their car in your driveway while you are away. Don't forget to cancel your mail, newspaper, spring water deliveries, and any other service you may receive at your residence. The Haworth Police Department also maintains a list of vacant homes. If you are going away for a week or more, call the Haworth Police Department and we will place you on the vacant house list.

  • Lastly, never hesitate to call the police department to report any suspicious persons, vehicles, or incidents. The residents of the community are the eyes and ears of the police department. Never feel embarrassed to call us. We are here to help you. So help us to help you and call us whenever you feel that something or someone in your community is "just not right."

Together we can keep Haworth one of the safest communities in the Northern Valley and Bergen County.

    House Number

The Haworth Police Department would like to remind all residents that house numbers should be very prominently displayed upon their homes. Haworth Borough ordinance requires that house number be clearly visible from the street. This enables responding emergency personnel to quickly provide emergency services to those in need. We thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

    Overnight Parking Restrictions

Beginning November 15 the Borough's overnight parking restrictions will be strictly enforced. Residents encountering any difficulties in removing vehicles from the street should contact the Haworth Police.
