Space Heater Safety
|
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), supplemental heating
equipment, such as electrical and kerosene heaters, is the leading cause of home fires
during the months of December, January, and February. Here are some tips for the safe
operation of space heaters:
- When purchasing a heater, look for one that has been tested and labeled by a
nationally recognized company.
- Keep the heater at least an arm's length away from drapes, furniture or other
flammable materials.
- Place the heater on a level surface away from areas where someone might bump it or
knock it over.
- Avoid using an extension cord; however, if you must use an extension cord, make sure
it is a heavy-duty cord marked with a power rating at least as high as that on the label
of the heater itself. (These extension cords are usually orange in color.)
- Never leave a space heater unattended or running while you sleep.
- Keep electric heaters away from water. never use electric heaters near a sink or
in the bathroom.
