Recent Legislation enacted to improve the health and well-being of New Jersey residents:

On March 1, 2006, New Jersey's Bicycle Helmet Law was amended to require that young people under the age of 17 wear an approved helmet when cycling, roller skating, in-line skating, or skateboarding. The previous law affected riders under the age of 14.

On April 15, 2006, the New Jersey Smoke-Free Air Act goes into effect. The law requires smoke-free environments in almost all indoor workplaces and includes "open to the public" places of business and service-related activities, except for a few specifically named exemptions. Places that must be smoke-free include, but are not limited to:

The Act also prohibits smoking on the grounds of any public or nonpublic elementary or secondary school, in addition to indoor school facilities. There are several specified exceptions where smoking may be permitted but are limited to casino, cigar bar, tobacco retail establishments and private residences and automobiles. All New Jersey residents can breathe a little easier with enactment of this legislation.
